Key Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has important limitations:

  • It does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Highly muscular individuals may be classified as overweight or obese.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older adults who have lost muscle mass.
  • It does not account for body fat distribution (e.g., abdominal fat), which is a key health risk factor.
  • It does not apply to pregnant women, children, or elite athletes.

BMI does not diagnose body fat levels or specific health conditions. For a more complete assessment, combine BMI with body fat percentage and waist circumference measurements. The CDC recommends a waist circumference of less than 40 inches for men and less than 35 inches for women to lower health risks.
